NEWS, REVIEWS, FACTS & TRIVIA
This section is simply a pot pourri of bits and bobs that may come and go, principally comprising some background info/trivia about some of the characters and settings used in my books, the odd review of books I have read, and any news I think might be interesting (such as if I've fallen over and broken my leg for instance, ho hum....). Some might describe it as a blog, but as I have no clear idea what a genuine blog is I'll stick with the title I've given it.
PROGRESS UPDATE
I am now actively working again on my (very) long-running sci-fi semi-epic Last Run. Page count is currently 285 so it is for sure no short story.
TWO CRACKING SCI-FI STORIES
Looking for a great reading and very dark sci-fi novel with a difference? Then try LUNATIC CITY by T. Allen Diaz, available in paperback and on Kindle. It's a fascinating blend of sci-fi and crime noir set on the Moon, featuring a hard-boiled police detective by the name of Frank Parker. And Frank is having a really bad day....
Absolutely recommended.
And talking about dark sci-fi stories I've also thoroughly enjoyed TERMINAL POINT, an action-packed dystopian-style novel by John Jason Lee, which is also available in paperback and on Kindle.
A Different Kind of Girlfriend Trivia
THE SECT is thought to have its origins in the Catholic Inquisition. Over the centuries it has grown into a vast and covert international organisation, dedicated to fighting Evil in all its forms. Its influence extends through every aspect of society, including governments, security and police forces, and social services.
WILLIAM BEDFORD LLOYD was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was saved from descent into a life of teenage crime by joining the US Army. As a young Ranger he had his baptism of fire in October 1993 when he was involved in the 'Black Hawk Down' incident in Mogadishu, Somalia. He later served in the First Gulf War before being discharged from the Army after an accident in training left him with a leg injury. Soon after he was recruited by the Sect and went on to become one of thier best vampire hunters, with many 'kills' to his credit. But then his combat skills brought him to the attention of one particular vampire opponent....
SAMOS, GREECE is the location in which the last third of A Different Kind of Girlfriend is set. All the places referred to in the story are real, with only Miriam's villa being a product of my imagination, although its setting can be readily identified. Samos is a beautiful island well worth a visit.
JONATHON RAYNER doesn't know for sure where he came from, or who his natural parents were. The Sect authorities had always told him they were Lithuanian immigrants who were killed in a car crash when Rayner was a baby, but this may well be a lie. It is just as likely he was abducted from his real parents by a Sect member, like many others have been. The Sect prefers that its young trainee vampire hunters have no family roots except those provided by the Sect itself.
GARWALL HOUSE, located in a remote part of Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, is the Sect's main Final Training Centre. However, two other smaller establishments exist, one sited outside of Codda, on Bodmin Moor, and the second on Foulness Island, Essex.
PAGE BACKGROUND DETAILS
For anyone of a railway bent like myself I thought I'd just give some brief info about the photographs I've used as page backgrounds, most of which were taken in the mid/late 1970's.
HOME PAGE: East German Class 52 2-10-0 standing in Dresden Hauptbahnhof station. The Class 52's were known as 'Kriegloks' (War Engines) because they were built in large numbers during WW2 to aid Germany's war effort.
BIO: Metre gauge steam locomotives of the Portuguese Railways stand in what passed as the locomotive depot at Tua, in the Douro Valley.
MY WRITING: Austerity Class 0-6-0ST 'Respite' passing below the spoil tips at Bickershaw Colliery, Lancashire.
MY BOOKS: A pair of 75cm gauge Meyer 0-4-4-0T's depart Oschatz in the then-East Germany bound for Mugeln with a train of standard-gauge wagons carried on narrow-gauge transporters.
FUTURE PROJECTS: Portuguese Railways metre-gauge Mallet 2-4-6-0T standing (I think!) in the isolated terminus of the Sabor line at Duas Igrejas.
NEWS, REVIEWS, FACTS & TRIVIA: East German 01 Class Pacific standing on the turntable at a locomotive depot in Berlin.
